Academic Staff Member (Applications until 31 August 2026)
The Dean of the Faculty of Art and Design of Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem announces a selection procedure for the position of Academic Staff Member at the Department of History and Theory of Art (KDTU) for teaching courses in the field of Theory and History of Design, with a preferred specialization in Graphic Design.
1 position:
Assistant Professor / Lecturer / Associate Professor at the Department of History and Theory of Art (KDTU) for teaching courses in the field of Theory and History of Design, with a preferred specialization in Graphic Design.
Requirements
- University degree in a relevant field (minimum Master’s degree).
- A teaching concept for the required area of theory and history of design and graphic design, with an emphasis on contemporary design, current trends in graphic design, and visual communication.
- Up-to-date knowledge of developments in the broader field of design and graphic design, both nationally and internationally.
- Good command of English.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
Workload: 50% of full-time working hours.
(The workload may be increased or reduced by mutual agreement.)

Additional Information
For Assistant Professors (holding a Master’s or Ph.D. degree), the standard teaching load in theoretical subjects at a full-time appointment is 12–18 teaching hours per week. For a 50% appointment, within an agreed Career Plan emphasizing creative and research activities, the teaching load is 6–9 teaching hours per week, depending on the current curriculum.
For Associate Professors, the teaching load at a full-time appointment is 10–14 teaching hours per week, corresponding to 5–7 teaching hours per week at a 50% appointment.
The position also includes:
- research and scholarly activities (including participation in research projects and publishing),
- supervision and consultation of Bachelor’s and Master’s theses,
- participation in examination and evaluation committees.
Teaching is conducted in Czech.
Expected Responsibilities
- Teaching theoretical courses in the field of Theory and History of Graphic Design, including contemporary approaches and practices in both Czech and international contexts, and the development of graphic design theory and history during the 20th and 21st centuries.
- Contributing to teaching in related areas such as:
- current trends in graphic design,
- visual communication,
- sustainable design,
- the origins of applied arts,
- design thinking,
- history and development of applied arts,
- and related subjects.
- Participation in semester project reviews and final state examination committees.
- Supervision of final student projects.
- Active involvement in the Faculty’s creative and research activities, including the preparation and implementation of the applicant’s own research and creative projects.
Teaching Concept
Applicants are requested to submit a general concept of the proposed courses in the field of Theory and History of Design with a specialization in Graphic Design (Part A) for the Bachelor’s and follow-up Master’s study programmes Design – Graphic Design, together with a proposal for courses closely related to their own expertise (Part B – selected by the applicant).
The concept may include a brief description of teaching methods and methods of student assessment.
Part A – Theory and History of Graphic Design
Examples of existing courses include:
- History and Theory of Graphic Design III (Bachelor’s programme) – Graphic design and its role in visual and material culture from the 1990s to the present.
- Introduction to the History and Theory of Graphic Design (Bachelor’s programme) – Introduction to graphic design and its place in visual and material culture within its historical context.
- Contemporary Design III (Master’s programme) – Contemporary graphic design from the late 20th century to the early 21st century.
Part B – Extended Specialization
Examples of courses include:
- Environmental Aspects of Contemporary Design (Bachelor’s programme) – Elective course reflecting current trends in environmental design.
- History and Theory of Graphic Design II (Bachelor’s programme) – Development of graphic design from the second half of the 20th century through the 1980s.
- Graphic Design and Ideology I & II – Two-semester elective course for Bachelor’s programmes across the Faculty.
- History and Theory of Design III (Bachelor’s programme) – Contemporary design from the late twentieth century to the present.

Selection Procedure
The first stage of the selection process will consist of an assessment of the submitted application materials. Applicants shortlisted after this stage will be invited to the second round consisting of an in-person interview.
The interviews are expected to take place at the beginning of September 2026.
