Academic Staff Member at the Department of History and Theory of Art for Teaching Courses in “History of Contemporary Visual Art” (applications by 13 June 2026)
The Dean of the Faculty of Art and Design at Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem announces an open call for the position of an academic staff member at the Department of History and Theory of Art to teach courses in the field of “History of Contemporary Visual Art” (0.5 FTE).
Number of Positions / Role / Field of Activity:
1x position – Assistant Professor, Assistant, or Associate Professor at the Department of History and Theory of Art for teaching courses in the History of Contemporary Visual Art.
Requirements:
- University degree in a relevant field, at least a Master’s degree
- Submission of a teaching concept in the required area of contemporary art history
- Overview of current developments in the broader context of contemporary art
- Good command of English, organizational and communication skills
Workload: 50% of full-time working hours (may be increased based on mutual agreement)
Expected Start Date: September 1, 2026
Place of Work: Faculty of Art and Design, Pasteurova 9, 400 96 Ústí nad Labem, Czech Republic

Additional Information:
For a full-time Assistant Professor (100% FTE), the direct teaching load in theoretical subjects is 12–18 hours per week (i.e., 6–9 courses per semester depending on ongoing creative activity). For the advertised 50% position, this corresponds to half of the above. An integral part of the position includes creative and research activities (expected involvement in research and publishing, organizing exhibitions, participation in current faculty activities), supervision and consultation of student theses, and participation in evaluation committees. Teaching is conducted in Czech.
Potential Job Responsibilities:
- Teaching courses in the history of contemporary art (20th and 21st centuries)
- Possible extension of teaching focus (e.g., methodology of art history, heritage preservation, project management, etc.) according to the applicant’s expertise
- Participation in final review committees and state examination boards, supervision of student theses
- Involvement in a range of creative and research activities of the faculty, including preparation and realization of own research and presentation projects
Teaching Concept Requirement:
Applicants are required to submit a general concept for teaching courses in the history of contemporary art (20th and 21st centuries) for Bachelor’s and follow-up Master’s degree programs (Design, Fine Arts).
Examples of Courses:
(each with 2 hours per week over 12 teaching weeks per semester)
- History of Art V (BA) – modern art from 1945 to 1970
- History of Art VI (BA) – modern art from 1970 to 2000
- History and Theory of Photography and New Media V (BA) – photography and new media from the 1960s to the 1980s
- History and Theory of Photography and New Media VII (BA) – global visual art after 1980 to the present, focusing on photography, multimedia, and video art
- History of Art I (MA, Design focus) – global and Czech visual art and culture from the 1970s to the 1990s
- History of Art II (MA, Design focus) – global and Czech visual art and culture from the 1990s to the early 21st century
- Contemporary Art II (MA, Fine Arts focus) – developments in global and Czech art in the second half of the 20th century
- Contemporary Art III (MA, Fine Arts focus) – developments in global and Czech art in the 21st century
