Academic Staff Member at the Department of History and Theory of Art for Teaching Courses in “Theory and History of Design, with a Preferred Specialization in Graphic Design” (applications by 13 June 2026)
The Dean of the Faculty of Art and Design at Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem announces an open call for the position of an academic staff member at the Department of History and Theory of Art to teach courses in the field of “Theory and History of Design, with a preferred specialization in Graphic Design” (0.5 FTE).
Number of Positions / Role / Field of Activity:
1x position – Assistant Professor, Assistant, or Associate Professor at the Department of History and Theory of Art for teaching courses in Theory and History of Design, with a preferred specialization in Graphic Design.
Requirements:
- University degree in a relevant field, at least a Master’s degree
- Submission of a teaching concept in the required area of design theory and history and graphic design, with an emphasis on contemporary design, current trends in graphic design, and visual communication
- Overview of current developments in the broader context of design and graphic design, both nationally and internationally
- Good command of English, organizational and communication skills
Workload: 50% of full-time working hours (may be adjusted based on mutual agreement)
Expected Start Date: September 1, 2026
Place of Work: Faculty of Art and Design, Pasteurova 9, 400 96 Ústí nad Labem, Czech Republic

Additional Information:
For a full-time Assistant Professor (100% FTE), the direct teaching load in theoretical subjects is 12–18 hours per week. For a 50% workload, within a career plan focused on creative and research activity, the teaching load is typically 6–9 hours per week depending on current study plans. For Associate Professors (Docent), the teaching load is 10–14 hours per week at 100% FTE, i.e., 5–7 hours per week at 50% FTE. Other responsibilities include creative and research activities (expected involvement in research and publishing), supervision and consultation of student theses, and participation in evaluation committees. Teaching is conducted in Czech.
Potential Job Responsibilities:
- Teaching theoretical courses in the field of theory and history of graphic design (current approaches and practices in both national and international contexts, development of graphic design theory and history in the 20th and 21st centuries)
- Expanding teaching focus in areas such as current trends in graphic design, visual communication, sustainable design, the genesis of applied arts, design thinking, history and development of applied arts, etc.
- Participation in final review committees and state examination boards, supervision of student theses
- Involvement in a range of creative and research activities of the faculty, including preparation and realization of own research and presentation projects
Teaching Concept Requirement:
Applicants are required to submit:
- A general concept for teaching courses in the theory and history of graphic design for Bachelor’s and follow-up Master’s degree programs in Design (specialization in Graphic Design) – Part A
- An additional general concept of courses corresponding to the applicant’s expertise – Part B (optional selection)
Examples of Courses:
(each with 2 hours per week over 12 teaching weeks per semester; may include brief specification of teaching methods and assessment)
Part A (Theory and History of Graphic Design):
- History and Theory of Graphic Design III (BA) – specifics of graphic design and its role in visual and material culture from the 1990s to the present
- Introduction to the History and Theory of Graphic Design (BA) – explanation of the specifics of graphic design and its place in visual and material culture in a historical context
- Contemporary Design III (MA) – with specialization in graphic design at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries
Part B (Extended Teaching Specialization):
- Environmental Aspects of Contemporary Design (BA) – elective course focused on current trends
- History and Theory of Graphic Design II (BA) – development from the second half of the 20th century to the 1980s
- Graphic Design and Ideology I & II – specialized two-semester elective course across faculty programs (Design, Graphic Design, Production for CCI)
- History and Theory of Design III (BA) – contemporary design shaped from the late 20th century to the present
